Sleep issues

Changes in sleep patterns can be a sign of stress. Insomnia is a problem – having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep – but so is excessive sleep. Not wanting to get up or an increase in napping can be a sign of depression.  Pay attention to how your caregivers seem on the job. If they seem sluggish or tired, check-in with them to see how they are doing.

Switch out shifts where possible so they get breaks from the most challenging shifts or residents. Encourage them to take time off and their scheduled breaks. Schedule team-building events that are focused on fitness and stress relief. Teach stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga, or finding what works for them from cardio to journaling. Ensure that they have a place that is separate from residents for them to take a breather when they are feeling overwhelmed.
