Should Hotels Stop Offering Full Service?

Full-service hotels are expensive to stay in and expensive to run. Is there still a place for them or are they a thing of the past? Is limited service the way to go? Let’s take a look at some of the differences.

Full service offers lots of extra amenities such as.

  • Turn-down service
  • Concierge
  • Shuttle service
  • Room service
  • Valet parking
  • Dry cleaning/laundry

Full-service hotels also typically have a bar or restaurant in the building. The finishes are probably higher end with luxury touches that make guest stays a memorable experience.

From a hotelier’s perspective, it’s expensive. You need a larger, more professional staff to provide the services and provide them well. Your space may need to be larger. But you can charge more and you’re likely to attract a more loyal clientele.

The audience for a limited-service hotel are guests who want a clean, secure place to crash for the night and shower before they take off in the morning. They probably want the basic, reliable service and amenities of a chain and may not even remember which hotel they stayed in.

Full-service hotel guests on the other hand probably stay longer because they may need to “set up camp” for a few days and thus depend on amenities like laundry service. They will be pleased if you offer a lot of extras and will be likely to rebook next time they are in town.

A full-service hotel also may have banquet or meeting rooms which will attract additional guests to keep your beds full. You can not only charge for the use of the space, you can also offer lodging to the attendees.

Full service or limited service, the people who run and work in your hotel can really set the tone for the quality of a guest stay. Where to find those highly qualified hotel professionals?
