5 Tips to Make Sure Your Private Club Is an Inclusive (not Just Diverse) Workplace

Diverse teams can bring undeniable benefits to private clubs, like an increase in employee and member satisfaction. But club leaders are learning that it is not enough to simply measure diversity success in numbers. They must also create an employer culture where diversity feels welcome and thrives. How can club leaders create inclusivity so that their diversity initiatives do not fall flat?

Create Accountability

Inclusiveness starts from the top-down, so management must be held accountable for fostering an environment where all employees can succeed. Management may not be aware of any ill effects of a policy or procedure, no matter how well-intended they are. Form a Diversity and Inclusion Council to assess any D&I goals, set new ones, and hold management accountable for any missteps. Be sure it includes individuals from a variety of roles and backgrounds.

Don’t Just Accommodate Differences

Celebrate them! Encourage team members to learn about each other’s different cultures. Allow a space for employees to share information on shows, events, and activities that they are passionate about. Make sure uniform policies are comfortable for different body types and religious rules. Also, be willing to adjust schedules to accommodate a variety of religious holidays.

Seek Out Feedback

Think beyond the suggestion box. Make it a priority to set aside time for supervisors and upper management to meet with all levels of staff. Make sure employees feel comfortable approaching leaders with questions and concerns outside of those times as well.

Provide Growth Opportunities

Give every worker the tools to not only be successful in their current roles but to advance to the next level. Create a mentorship program so entry-level workers can gain exposure to potential career paths. Make schedules that accommodate schooling. If possible, create a tuition reimbursement program so that every team member can continue their education, regardless of their financial background.
