As effective as the employee-referral process can be, some key improvements are still needed.

Scott Samuels, CEO of Horizon Hospitality, was quoted in this recent article published at Human Resource Executive Online.

Samuels, whose firm provides executive-placement services to companies in the hospitality industry, says referral programs are often undermined by two things: corporate culture and inadequate rewards. “Sometimes, these programs don’t work because employees simply don’t want to refer their friends to your company because it’s not a great place to work,” he says. “No matter how you spin it or how much money you give out, if you haven’t created a positive environment at your organization, it’s just not going to work.”

Samuels talks about what undermines referral programs and how companies really need to evaluate the cost for sourcing and recruiting new employees. He also talks about how companies need to promote successful referrals to create internal momentum for helping bring great additions to the team.
