Goal-Setting for 2015: How to Create Effective Goals In The Hospitality Industry

The economy is showing signs of recovery. With more spendable money in consumer pockets, it should be a banner year for the hospitality industry. People will be dining out, vacationing, traveling for business. How can you create goals for your team that will help them to manage the boom?

Communicate Company Objectives

It’s critical that your team understand the top-down strategy for your company if they are to get on board with your organization’s goals. Whether you plan to expand in the coming year, or if you are just hoping to get back on your feet after a few tough years, it’s critical to let your team know where you are now and where you hope to go. This will help them see how the expectations laid out for them dovetail with what the company hopes to achieve.

Set Obtainable Goals

They should be specific, relevant and measurable. Don’t just say we want to improve customer satisfaction, say that you want to reach X number of positive online reviews. Create objectives for each individual that make the best of their abilities and line up with company goals.

Identify and Nurture Hospitality Talent

Each of your employees should have an area at which they excel (honestly, if they don’t, they shouldn’t be working there). Don’t try to fit square pegs into round holes. Figure out what your people do best, find ways to help them do it even better and create a path for them to take that talent up the ladder at your company.

Set Training Goals

Increase focus on training and cross-training your people. The more you put into your team members in terms of helping them learn more and advance their careers, the better your chances of keeping them there for the long haul.
