Make Your Hospitality Goals Attainable in 2017

What is 2017 looking like for you? Are you looking to adopt some of the latest trends such as a no-tipping model, a food haul venue or accommodating bleisure travelers? Are you considering changes to your menu to incorporate locally sourced foods? Are you upgrading your technology? Maybe you’re focused on something simpler such as increasing revenue or expanding your business.

No matter what your 2017 goals, your key to reaching them is coming up with a plan.

You are no doubt aware of “SMART” goals…specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound. Let’s discuss how this can apply specifically to the hospitality industry.

For example, take the goal of expanding your business.

Specific

In what way do you wish to expand? It could mean adding a new location, putting an addition onto your current building or simply increasing the number of employees or size of your menu.

Measurable

If you want to add a new location in 2017, break down the steps involved and set dates for when each should be achieved. Steps could include shopping for locations, signing a lease, hiring for the new location and deciding what your services will be exactly at the new location.

Attainable

Is it possible to get a new location up and running in just a year? You may need to conduct market research, gather the funds and find just the right spot. Accomplishing all this could mean you won’t open the doors at your new location until 2018 or even later. Making sure this is possible can prevent you from getting discouraged if you miss your self-imposed deadline.

Realistic

Do you have the resources to expand right now? If your current location isn’t successful, you don’t have the cash reserved or you have overwhelming personal or family obligations, this may not be the right year to attempt this goal.

Time Bound

While you want your goals to be attainable and realistic, it’s important you do put a deadline on your goal. Thinking that someday you’d love to open another location will never get it done. It’s been said that a goal is a dream with a deadline.
