Find the Hardest-Working Millennials

There is a common misconception that millennials are not as hardworking as previous generations. This notion usually comes from people who don’t have much experience working with people of varying ages. You may have to adapt your recruiting and hiring process to attract and retain the newest entries to the labor market, but understanding what makes them tick can increase your chances of finding the hardest-working people.

Be transparent when interviewing. Millennials grew up with information at their fingertips. They like to do their research and understand the reason that things are done the way they are. Make sure they understand not just the responsibilities of the position, but how their tasks fit into the overall strategy of the company.

Give them influence. Millennials don’t mind hard work, but they need to see that they are having an impact. Solicit their feedback, both in the interview and on the job. You may find that the candidate you are interviewing has given the industry, your company and position a lot of thought. Not only do their ideas reveal how seriously they take the opportunity, they represent a significant part of your target market, and may be able to offer insights.

Show them the way. With the last few years’ soft economy, many millennials are plagued by underemployment. If you are recruiting them for an entry-level position, show them a path to work themselves out of it and up the corporate ladder. Most won’t mind paying their dues if they know their efforts will eventually pay off.

Get involved in the community. Millennials participate in charitable activities in record numbers. So if you are looking for hardworking young people, skip the $100-a-plate dinner, and head to an urban garden project or charity run. What better way is there to find people who don’t mind getting their hands dirty than working with them side by side?
